Santa Pod Raceway will unveil the latest addition to its roster of historic drag racing hardware when Roarin’ Rat takes the stand next month at the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. The venerable 1957 Chevy was transformed into a high-riding, supercharged, ‘rat’-motored (big-block Chevrolet V8) dragstrip demon in 1978. Since then it has featured twice on the cover of Custom Car magazine and has run low-10sec quarter-miles at 130mph. Just weeks ago, the scarlet machine joined the NSRA’s ‘Gasser Circus’ display at the Goodwood Revival. Following a succession of different owners, the hot rod has at last arrived at its spiritual UK home as a key acquisition destined for Santa Pod’s forthcoming museum project.
On the Santa Pod stand, Roarin’ Rat will provide a vivid vintage counterpoint to Martin Hill’s FireForce 5 Jet Dragster which entertained the crowds at September’s European Finals with a supreme, practical demonstration of the expression ‘show & go’ – volcanic, flame-throwing start line displays climaxed by a scorching 5.22sec/302mph quarter-mile blast. Visitors to the stand will be able to take a close look at the Pratt & Whitney J60 jet engine and chat to the driver and crew who handle the beast.
While the vehicles draw the attention, Santa Pod will use the occasion to launch the print edition of its 2019 Calendar, a compendium of more than 50 events ranging from FIA/FIM European Championship drag races to ‘Run What Ya Brung’ public track days, interspersed with all manner of festivals, modified car shows and enthusiast weekends.
Santa Pod again shares the stand with Lucas Oil Products UK. The Lucas Oil team will be on hand to answer questions about the company’s premier lubricants, additives and car-care materials and will present an array of its products for sale.
Santa Pod’s Classic Motor Show team will be pleased to welcome visitors to Stand 660 in Hall 2 throughout the event.
