Welcome... September 2011

It’s official. After decades of languishing as an automotive metaphor for being square, old-fashioned and terminally ‘uncool’, folks have finally rediscovered what marvellously versatile and (say it out loud!) practical vehicles American station wagons can be.

Welcome... September 2011

Ben Klemenzson, Editor

When we acquired our Buick Estate wagon a couple of years back, some friends dropped by and were aghast at its size and sheer in-yer-face presence. “Oh. My. God,” said one, “I can’t believe you’ve got that thing on your drive.” Two weeks later he was asking me if he could borrow it to move house with. I rest my case your honour…

So, welcome to our station wagon special which in keeping with this being Chevrolet’s centennial year has a bit of a bow-tie flavour to it (I’d like to say I planned it that way, but the reality is that I found myself inundated with Chevy wagons!). Apart from our in-depth history of the wagon we’ve brought things bang up to date with a tweaked 300C Hemi Touring; it’s amazing to think that these cars are on the market to buy (second-hand admittedly) today.

I hope you enjoy your Muscle Car DVD; we’ve got a few treats planned for Classic American readers in the coming months, including some great Collector Edition posters. Putting together this month’s magazine we had a couple of features which we simply just couldn’t cram in, including our Project Falcon, which we’re hoping will make its debut on our stand at the Classic Motor Show at the NEC in November - Fingers crossed!

Speaking of which, I had a bit of a shock the other day when having ordered about £45 worth of bits online from the US (trim parts not available from any UK parts supplier) I was slapped with £60 worth of customs and duty. And that’s something to remember; you might think you’re getting the bargain of the century when ordering parts from North America, but when you have to pay customs and duty on top, it can easily double the original price. And don’t forget also that non-UK purchases are not covered by British consumer laws.
