Happy 250th!
By: Web Editor
In the words of the Grateful Dead: “What a long strange trip it’s been…” This month’s magazine isn’t celebrating 250 years of Classic American, but 250 issues, which translates into 24 years since that first undated issue hit the shelves back in the summer of 1988.
A lot’s changed in the intervening years: the dawn of the internet and mobile phones, the fall of communism and the demise of several American car marques...
Yet, in many ways, life is a lot easier for the American car or truck enthusiast today than it was a quarter of a century ago. The internet has become a veritable horn of plenty for information, parts and vehicles that only a generation ago we could have only dreamed of. There are many more businesses involved in the scene than there were 25 years ago, and despite escalating fuel costs, owning and running an American car is still a relatively inexpensive and fun pastime…
If, like many of our readers, you’ve been with us from the beginning, I hope you’ll enjoy this special 140-page 250th issue. We’ve gathered together a veritable smorgasbord of features and cars that we think sum up the best of Classsic American: ’57 Chevrolet, ’59 Cadillac ’64 Mustang, ’69 Charger… they’re all here, along with features from past Classic American editors Tony Beadle and Paul Guinness. There are even a few dearly departed regular features like Scale Autos and Cruisin’ Cuts making an appearance.
I’ve been lucky enough to spend 17 years with Classic American on much of its 250-issue journey – and I hope we can continue to serve our readers and advertisers for another 250. So, till 2032, here’s wishing you a very happy 250th issue.
