Cha’ Cha’ Change...

Is the American car scene changing? As older cars become scarcer and newer ones replace them; you could argue the demographic is always in a state of transition or flux. Are some of our nicer, rarer and more interesting American cars leaving these shores, heading back to the US or mainland Europe and Scandinavia, bought by enthusiasts tempted by the weakness of Sterling and our relatively low prices? It’s an issue raised by a reader in our Letters page this month and it’s certainly an interesting perspective.

Cha’ Cha’ Change...

However, there are some cars which we come across periodically, that always remain. In this month’s Behind the Wheel (P87) Keith Harman tells how after literally decades of waiting he’s got his hands on an elusive shoebox Ford that’s been in and out of his life all that time. Likewise, I remember seeing my own Olds 442 at a Damn Yankees show at Blake Hall almost 15 years ago, falling in love with it and swearing to myself that if it ever came up for sale I’d buy it, whether I had the money or not… 10 years later it did come up for sale and predictably I didn’t have the money, but somehow I knew it was an opportunity I’d regret forever if I let it slip by...

The beautiful 1957 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday hardtop featured in this month’s magazine is a similar story; whilst I never swore I’d buy it, I’ve seen it in the distance at the RoG or Wheels Day, literally driving off as I’ve clocked it. At last, we’ve captured this beauty on film and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s been worth the wait.

Luckily there are plenty more elusive and evasive cars out there just like this one, and we hope to capture them for your pleasure also. In a similar vein, if you’ve always promised yourself a Yank, but just haven’t gotten round to doing anything about it, then this month’s magazine might be your lucky issue as we’re carrying 15 pages of private cars for sale, in fact there’s so many of them we’ve had to add an extra column per page, meaning we’re now carrying almost 450 private classifieds in this issue alone – Happy hunting!
