Better than a Rolls...

Dear Classic American,...Having subscribed to your excellent magazine for some while now I thought that I would write to you about my humble opinion of American cars.

I bought my Mk V Lincoln Continental four years ago. The car is absolutely immaculate in every respect, and a pleasure to drive. It has cruise control, automatic dipping headlights, electric-powered just about everything: seats, windows and remote controlled mirrors.

The ride, particularly on motorways, is frankly better than anything I have ever been in (including Rolls-Royces, of which I have owned two). Another huge benefit is the cheapness and availability of spares and, being such a simple car, I do all the maintenance myself. A friend commented that the cruise control looked a bit primitive, well it is and still working perfectly after 33 years without any attention at all.

I have owned quite a few cars over the years, including two Ferraris – I only bought the second one to confirm the appalling build quality of the first one. The final trick it played on me was to get the key stuck in the passenger door lock while my wife and I were trying to go out for a meal. That sort of build quality would make an Austin Allegro look pretty good. The only downside to the Lincoln is of course fuel consumption, but even this is not too bad if driven sensibly, and the benefits of everything else easily outweigh this. I still can't believe how little I paid for this lovely luxurious car. As you can tell, I’m totally converted!

Choose carefully and there are some great bargains to be had out there; cars which not only look and drive great, but are fantastic value for money and future classics whose value can only appreciate in the future. A ’79 Continental Mark V could be a future ’59 Cadillac we reckon...
