A sad note

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Classic American’s founding editor Tony Beadle last month. Having read the the title since issue one when I was a student, he was someone I was familiar with from being a teenager.

A sad note

Ben Klemenzson, Editor

Later when I came to work on Classic American Tony had left for pastures new, but his legacy remained in what was still a vibrant, much-loved title that went on to grow and prosper throughout the Noughties under the stewardship of Auto Trader.

I came to know Tony from bumping into him at shows and periodically he contributed to the title. Indeed this issue contains the last feature he completed for Classic American and I feel honoured that we can include it, as it typifies his work: engaging, meticulously researched and just a damn good read. If anyone could make sense of the convoluted and incredibly complex corporate family tree that was American Motors (formerly Hudson, Nash and others) it was Tony Beadle.

We’ll be running a special feature on Tony in next month’s issue. In the meantime, make sure you read the second instalment of his definitive history of American Motors starting on page 66.

This month’s magazine features three of the cars that were in last year’s Car of the Year competition (Cadillac, Buick and Mustang); I think you’ll agree they’re simply stunning and a credit to the hard work and devotion of their owners. Make sure you check them out, quite simply they’re inspirational!

And if you have any room left on your garage or study wall, here is yet another Classic American Collectors’ Series poster.

This month it’s the turn of the fabulous 1960 Cadillac (a red Coupe de Ville and a green Eldorado), a car very much overshadowed by its predecessor, the ‘59, but which those in the know always acknowledge is the superior of the two. Or is it? Let us know your thoughts!
